Terrorism
Today, terrorism is threatening the peace and harmony of the whole world. Somehow, we must combat these acts of genocide instigated by militant extremists or risk falling even deeper into chaos. Terrorism increasingly threatens world safety: while it is important for the global community to continue its attempts to apprehend these terrorists, until we address the root causes of terrorism, this problem will continue to grow. Often the most devastating terrorist attacks are those committed by suicide bombers, as demonstrated by the events of 9/11 and other attacks. It is indeed frightening that such terrorists – who have no regard for others’ lives – can have so little regard for their own, as well. How does a person become so desperate?
Key root factors contributing to terrorism
While terrorism is a complex issue, and many factors contribute to its rise and growth, we have identified the following as key causes of terrorist activity:
A person’s right to survive and live decently is threatened or challenged.
A person experiences in their life a combination of anxiety, isolation, depression, or hopelessness.
A person feels confident and sure – either on their own account or under the influence of others – that religious certitude or patriotism justifies taking their life and the lives of innocent people.
Violence is not a permanent solution to combat terrorism
Violence is not a permanent solution to combating terrorism: while a violent response may temporarily suppress the problem, violence will worsen the situation in the end, ultimately causing more deep-rooted problems.
Education is the long-term peace solution to terrorism
We believe that education is the single most effective long-term method to curb and prevent violence and terrorism. Our proposed educational program will foster proper values and attitudes in children, laying the foundation for better choices and lessening the influence of the religious extremists, and terrorists. To eliminate terrorism completely, we must also address the other root causes of terrorist acts and alleviate situations where people are constantly facing indecency, desperation, and hopelessness. Education is a feasible long-term approach to help solve many of the current predicaments that we are facing.
